Mike Pierce
Construction Process & Production Manager, construction
What do you do at McKee Homes and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?
I am a site superintendent. You would come to me with any construction related questions or concerns, maybe talk sports or news.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
Confident and calm. I am confident in my role and what is involved. I am calm as in everyday something new is thrown at you, whether it is a scheduling issue, a building issue, or a people/trade issue. I think you must show both traits to show leadership. You cannot freak out!
How do you prefer to start your day?
I start my day with a cup of tea or coffee. Try to get to every site by noon, then can spend afternoon trouble shooting where necessary.
How do you prefer to end your day?
End my day usually at the office, sending out emails or booking inspections.
What was your first job?
My first job was working for my mom’s cousin, in a downtown building removing asbestos. It lasted two days once my mom figured out what I was doing. I was 14 or 15 at the time.
What was your first job at McKee and what do you do now?
I was a finishing carpenter for McKee. My sister-in-law was building with us and wanted me to do the work. That is how I got my foot in the door. I did that for about 6 or 7 years. Went away for a year to pursue something else. I did not like what I was doing, and I called Elaine to see if they needed any finishing carpenters. She asked me to come in and see her as she had a different plan for me, Construction Superintendent. That was 15 years ago now.
What energizes you at work?
I get jazzed by taking pride in what I do. Not that we want to have a lot of issues, but it still excites me to solve issues and bring all the various pieces of building a home together.
What is a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
I think the professional site management certification is big. Being loyal to them as well as them being loyal in return is also huge, and I think the 15 years and counting shows this.
