McKee Homes builds fully energy efficient house in Airdrie
“Who doesn’t want to see zeros on their bills?”
This may be a seemingly easy question to answer at first glance, but for McKee Homes it is a much deeper concept than meets the eye.
In essence, a “net zero” home is designed to effectively use zero energy across the course of year. Although not an easy task, McKee Homes is currently closing in on finishing its very first net zero home fully designed in Airdrie.
McKee Homes energy coordinator Stephanie Doel said a net zero home is achieved by highly energy efficient insulation, windows that reflect light, energy efficient appliances, and airtight seals.
Stephanie explained that a major component of living in a net zero home is the way that it generates energy. Through the use of solar panels installed on the roof of a home, any energy that is taken in is turned around into generated electricity.
“What is put in, is put out; and that is essentially how the home can operate with no wasted energy,” said Stephanie.
